The rest of the guide book I would personally say should all be lumped into the “Data” section. Honestly, the most useful part of this section is just the shopping lists, and even that doesn’t really change much from town to town, except for a few pieces of equipment, so even then it’s not really that helpful… Star Ocean Official Guide Book “Data” Section Never in my life (26 years!) have I seen a guide book that has purposely with-held so much information and just been so vague about everything as much as this guide book is. I know most of you reading this will think i’m screwing with you, but this is the entirety of the “Guide” section of the Star Ocean Official Guide Book. Instead of something like “Head to the Inn and find So-and-so, who will then join your party, and then travel south of town towards So-and-so Shrine”, you’ll literally just get “If you go to the Inn…”. For some reason, all story-related advice is purposefully vague. Aside from the shopping lists and city map, most of the time you’ll have a little backstory/current situation description of each town, usually accompanied by a tiny screenshot of an in-game event or Private Action. Shop lists with items and prices are also listed when available. While the maps are a lot smaller than what you’d see in most other guide books (the map only takes up about 20-25% of the page), the image quality is clear enough to keep things easy to navigate. Each page has a map of the town with a few markers indicating important areas/shops. Now, to get back on track here, i’ll go over what the guide actually covers in the “Guide” section of the book – Towns! The town overviews are decently detailed. The fact that this guide doesn’t include anything other than an occasional “after leaving town you’ll head to a dungeon”, I can’t understand how this could even be considered a “guide book” by any interpretation… Think about this, the only parts of the game that you’d even need a guide for are all of the puzzles in the dungeons, or at least just the map layouts. If you take a look at the guide for long enough, you’ll notice that the guide only covers TOWNS!Īn example of one of the slightly disappointing town overviews…the movement speed is so fast compared to the size of the maps that you won’t really even need to look at a map… Nothing in the guide mentioned anything about that door, the Dash skill being a necessity, or even anything about the dungeon at all. Maybe for everyone else this was a no-brainer, but for me I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me. The first occasion could potentially be forgiven because I got stuck during the first or second dungeon, where you’re required to Dash into a door to open it. Fool me once, shame on you – fool me twice, shame on me – fool me 3 times, time to chuck this guide into hellfire. I checked this guide during 3 occasions, and all 3 times it didn’t help me figure out what to do next. Star Ocean was one of the 2 games so far that I actually decided to crack open an official guide to figure out what to do next (the other game being Romancing SaGa 3). To be blunt, the Star Ocean Official Guide Book didn’t really help me at all during my playthrough. I originally thought that maybe I was just too used to Square guides, but then I remembered that I just recently reviewed Elnard The Encyclopedia of Adventure, which is another Enix guide book. Right out of the gate, you can tell that the Star Ocean Official Guide Book feels different from other guides of the era. On the way to Cadianon, go to your room and nap until arrival.A fold-out world(?) map at the beginning of the guide book Once aboard, you have the option to return to Aeos to report back to Grafton (optional, but opens a fun Private Action) or go straight to Cardianon. After the cut scene, head for the Celnus. Now it's time to revisit Triom one last time. It'll take you a few minutes, but it's not a difficult fight. Also keep your projectile fighters firing away without regard for MP. He'll periodically slam into the ground and when he does, let loose with both of Edge's special attacks in a chain. He hovers around, which makes it difficult for edge to attack, so you'll have to be patient. Barachiel is healed by ice/water attacks, so make sure Faize's Ice Needle skill is disabled. Go through the door and examine the strange crystal.īoss time. There's yet another save point by the door. There's a chest with an ice barrier and a Power Bracelet inside. If you veer off to the east there's a room with some blackberries and a heal point. There's a big room with an elevator in the middle.
